Shall we talk a little bit more about this affliction called 'laziness'?.
Quick definition before we proceed;
‘Laziness’ is the unwillingness to work or use energy, and/or a lack of effort or care.
From this I get two things. (a) it’s a self-inflicted affliction, and (b) it’s entirely up to you whether you overcome it or not.
Laziness is largely based on feelings. You know you should be studying but you don't 'feel' like it, you're 'not in the mood ' or the 'studying vibe' just isn't there. We've all been there; done that.
But being lazy, by far, is one of the worst reasons anyone can have for not doing their work and not achieving their goals.
Know this; you can't expect to base your studying and how efficiently you do it, on how you feel. Emotions are quite overpowering, true and giving into them is very pleasurable, understandable. But you won't get things done following their lead.
I particularly like one Bemba word for ‘Laziness’… ‘Ukuilekelesha’, which translates to ‘to let yourself go’. That’s basically what it is; You’re not in charge so you ‘let yourself go’ with the flow of your emotions, your mood, etc. and end up ignoring priorities.
In the end, you’re the one who gains nothing, other than the instant gratification that you got, which will probably morph into regret anyway.
Okay, now that you’ve seen the ugliness of laziness (kindly appreciate the rhyme there), and gained the right amount of shame that doesn’t demoralize you, but rather motivates you to want to change, what next? The antidote!
You seriously only need one thing to set you right, and that’s discipline. Self-discipline. One of the most difficult things to train yourself in, but if you want those good grades badly enough, you’ll stick to the end. This really is not for quitters.
You can learn, over time, to be the one in charge of your feelings, and not them over you. Your mind can control your mood and you can choose to go act according to it or not.
Sure, it's more enjoyable if your feelings are on board with your mind, and you actually feel like studying. Those moments are awesome! However, if we’re being truthful, no matter how much you're in love with school, you won't always feel like it. Laziness will creep in occasionally. The best thing for you to do is to get yourself in that group of people that can shake it off when they must. Notice I say ‘get yourself into-‘ because you don’t just find yourself in it, you work for it. You really can’t waste all the moments you don’t feel like studying. But you doing it anyway is profitable. Therefore, it stands to reason that you should practice keeping your mind in charge of your emotions. It's even useful outside the classroom, so that's a bonus.
It can literally be done; mind over emotion. Sceptical? Give it a try for like two years and see how that works out. Yes, two years, these things take time.
Let's face it, no lazy person gets all things they're supposed to, done. If you keep giving in to it, you simply will not achieve much of what you want to at the end of the day. Those grades that you want, you won't get them.
To wrap this all up in one short, bluntly-put phrase,
